Grow some backbone, Umno/BN

I think Umno and BN have totally forgotten their raison d’être in a democratic society. As political parties, they only know how to exist as a ruling party.

After their defeat, it would appear they have lost their purpose for existence. Even Umno, the biggest party in BN in terms of the number of MPs and membership, sees the need to kow tow to the new prime minister.

Other component parties within BN, especially those in Sarawak and Sabah, have quickly disintegrated and are now all rushing to the exit door.

Have they got no backbone or tenacity?

In fact, it brings forth to the open the quality, value and character of those helming Umno/BN all these years. Are they politicians and leaders only when they are in power?

They have only been in the opposition for a month and yet they have displayed disenchantment and disillusionment for all to see.

For goodness sake, show some resolve. The country needs a loyal and capable opposition to keep in check the government of the day.

Umno/BN must learn from Pakatan Harapan parties when they were in the opposition. Despite relentless harassment and persecution, PH leaders rarely wavered from their struggle.

I think as an opposition coalition, Umno/BN “hasn’t seen nothing yet”.

They must first ask how long PH component parties have been in existence with nothing much to show, election after election for decades.

They must find out from people like Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Guan Eng, Mat Sabu, Lim Kit Siang and many others what it was like to be in prison due to politics.

They must find out the feelings of those who were saddled with multiple charges in court, both civil and criminal. And, of course, they must find out the frustration of many who could not travel abroad or even to Sarawak and Sabah for no good reason.

I have no idea how the PH federal government will treat Umno/BN going forward.

I have no idea whether or not PH will install a “don’t challenge me” speaker in the Dewan Rakyat. To me, the battle has not even begun and yet I see despair and defeat on the opposition front.

To succeed, Umno/BN must learn a thing or two from PH when it was in the opposition. For instance, from 2008 to 2018, Selangor and Penang did not dissociate themselves from PH or join Umno/BN.

Over to you Sarawak BN component parties, who are now known as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
